iPhone paid apps chart dominated by games

iPhone paid apps chart dominated by games

Two thirds of the Top 100 paid apps on iPhone App Store are games, according to an analysis conducted by Mobile Entertainment.

We crunched data from the UK App Store’s chart yesterday (3rd August 2009) and found that 66 of the Top 100 apps were games.

The next most popular categories – Entertainment and Utilities – only tallied chart placings each.

Our research also shows that cracking the Top 100 chart usually requires aggressive pricing. In fact, the average price of an app in the list is just £1.57.

59p is the most popular price point, with 55 of the Top 100 paid apps opting for it. Eight apiece for £1.19 and £1.79 means 71 of the charting apps cost less than two quid.

However, the second most popular price point is £2.99, which is where you’ll find a lot of games from ‘traditional’  games firms like EA Mobile, Gameloft, Sega and Taito. 18 apps cost £2.99 in the chart, and 16 of those are games.

Finally, our analysis finds a hunger for new apps among iPhone users. Nearly a third (30) of the Top 100 paid apps were released in July this year, while a further 39 were released between April and June. Only 17 apps on the chart were released in 2008.
