iPhone leaps ahead in browsing stakes

Apple overtakes Opera in the mobile browser league table, according to new research.

StatCounter says iPhone overtook Opera as the world’s most popular mobile browser during February.

The research says Apple's device now has 24 per cent of the global market, followed by Opera with 22 per cent.

Nokia has 18 per cent, iPod Touch 14 per cent, BlackBerry 5.8 per cent and Sony PSP 3.4 per cent.

In the UK, iPhone and iPod Touch also lead the market with 31 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. This is followed by Nokia (13 per cent), BlackBerry (9.6 per cent) and Opera (7.5 per cent).

The StatCounter research data is based on a sample of four billion pageloads per month. Other regional and country breakdowns can be viewed here.

Aodhan Cullen, CEO and founder of StatCounter, said: “Apple through the iPhone and iPod Touch is making mobile internet browsing accessible to the masses. Globally iPhone has been consistently ahead of Opera since mid-February.”
