iPhone: It's June

Apple has confirmed that it will release the iPhone in June. Just.

The company revealed the launch date of June 29th in a series of ads aired on 60 Minutes in the US over the weekend. As previously disclosed the device will cost $499 or $599 depending on memory capacity, and be available via AT&T only. There’s still no news on a Euro launch or network partner.

Since Apple released details of the product in January, opinion has differed on its impact. Some believe it will transform the business and alter accepted notions of the mobile user interface. Other argue it will remain a niche device for Apple obsessives only – and the that the screen will get very greasy.

Apple said it wants to capture one per cent of the phone market with the device, and has set a goal of shipping 10 million. It would be a fine achievement, but it should also be pointed out that Nokia sells around 350 million phones a year.
