Fresh speculation suggests Apple is ready to let Verizon have a turn on the iPhone.
USA Today says Apple would need to build a new version of its device since Verizon runs a CDMA network, unlike all other roll-outs, which have been on GSM.
AT&T has exclusive US distribution rights to the iPhone into 2010, following a deal negotiated in 2006. When Apple launched its device, it pursued a policy of exclusive operator deals. However, it's inevitable that this situation won't endure thanks to the huge popularity of iPhone. In France, it's already available across all networks - admittedly for legal reasons.
Verizon has 80 million customers, and has traditionally been aggressive in content due to its emphasis on the BREW ecosystem.
