iPhone game Real Racing GTI tops 2m downloads

Good news for developer Firemint – and sponsor Volkswagen.

Firemint has announced that its Real Racing GTI iPhone game has been downloaded more than two million times since its launch in mid-October.

The free game was a cut-down version of the existing Real Racing game, and was sponsored by Volkswagen. It let players race in the new Volkswagen 2010 GTI car, and compete against each other in an online leaderboard.

It's just the latest iPhone success for Volkswagen, whose VW Polo Challenge  developed by Fishlabs - raced to more than a million downloads earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the carmaker has launched a contest to give away six limited-edition GTIs to US players of either version of Real Racing, with the first winner announced today.

“Consumer response to Real Racing GTI has been phenomenal,” says Tim Ellis, VP of marketing at Volkswagen of America. “We are thrilled they have reacted to it with such enthusiasm and in such a short time frame.”
