Trip Hawkins says the success of Apple's device has taken himself and the industry by surprise.

The Digital Chocolate CEO has told Venturebeat that his own company's success on the iPhone is already comparable to that enjoyed by PlayFish on Facebook.

In the interview Hawkins elaborates on the trends behind last month's news that Dchoc games had generated 8 million downloads from the App Store (free and paid).

Specifically, he asserts that the company makes as much money from releasing a game for iPhone/iPod Touch alone as it would do from releasing it across a hundred regular handsets.

Hawkins added: "Between the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I think the platform is freaking out Sony and Nintendo [makers of the PSP and DS handhelds, respectively]."

However, he cautions that branded titles don't perform that well on Apple's platform compared to made-for-iPhone originals.
