iPhone drives 81 per cent of Q4 AT&T smartphone sales

Helps push the US operator to a record number of 9.4m smartphones sold in total.

Following Apple's delivery of some incredible figures yesterday, which included the sales of 37 million iPhones in Q4, AT&T has revealed financials showing it has Apple to thank for its record 9.4 million smartphones sold in a single quarter.

iPhone accounted for 7.6 million smartphones sold in Q4, while 56.8 per cent of the operator's 69.3 postpaid subscribers had smartphones, which is up from 42.7 per cent in 2010.

Additionally, AT&T's final quarter ended with it nearly doubling sales in Q4 from Q3, and selling 50 per cent more devices than the previous quarterly record.

Despite all of this, the firm received a $6.7 billion net loss as a result of the failed merger with T-Mobile USA.

AT&T's net income for the full year of 2011 was $3.9 billion compared to $19.9 billion in 2010, while full year revenue for 2011 was $126.7 billion compared to from $124.3 billion in 2010 at a rise of just two per cent.

Randall Stephenson, AT&T’s chairman and CEO, said: "We had a tremendous year in terms of execution, and we have excellent momentum across our growth platforms. This was a blowout quarter for sales. Our network performance is at a high level on voice quality and best-in-class mobile download speeds.

"Looking ahead, we start 2012 with the best visibility we've had in some time, and we're well positioned to deliver solid results - including continued revenue growth with margin expansion, solid earnings per share growth and strong cash flow."
