3.8m Apple users and 2m for Android in December 2010
The rise of US smartphone platforms in Japan is a source of fascination for many in the industry, given the historically closed nature of the ecosystem there.
But it seems the land of NTT DoCoMo and i-mode is not immune to the seductive powers of the US platforms.
According to Comscore, smartphone adoption during December 2010 hit 7m mobile (seven per cent of the total market), up 33.5 per cent from September 2010.
And it's Apple and Google that account for the largest volume of smartphone users. In December 2010, 3.8m smartphone subscribers used Apple devices, up 48 per cent from June 2010.
Google Android devices grew to more than 2m from just 435,000 users in June.
