iPhone 5 to support MasterCard PayPass NFC payments?

Heavy hints dropped by credit card giant.

It's an open secret that Apple has been hiring NFC specialists and filing NFC patents. But as yet, there's no sign of any hardware support for the contactless tech.

But a fresh hint that something is imminent has just come from Mastercard in an interview with Fast Company, in which the firm's emerging payments head Ed McLaughlin said 'all' key manufacturers are currently working to embrace NFC.

When questioned whether that includes Apple, McLaughlin, said: "Um, there are...like I say, [I don't know of] any handset maker out there [that isn't]. Now, when we have discussions with our partners, and they ask us not to disclose them, we don't."

MasterCard's PayPass platform allows users to make contactless purchases in stores with a NFC-enabled plastic PayPass card, and the firm has already partnered RIM to enable the service in BlackBerry phones.

These new disclosures will add to the expectation that iPhone 5 will support NFC too.
