But the second-generation iPod touch is back in play.
Apple has confirmed that its Game Center iOS gaming community will not work on the iPhone 3G or first-generation iPod touch.
Game Center will instead be available on the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, and the second, third and new fourth-generation iPod touch at launch, with iPad following later this year.
The iPhone 3G could run the first few developer builds of Game Center, but was removed from the list last month, along with the second-generation iPod touch.
The latter device is back on the slate for this week's launch, though, according to Apple's Game Center page on its website.
Game Center will be part of Apple's iOS 4.1 software update, which is expected to be made available to consumers either today or tomorrow.
