iPad's launch in numbers

What the analysts and market researchers are saying about Apple's tablet.

Apple's iPad goes on sale this Saturday in the US, and there's been no shortage of analysts queuing up to predict how many million units it'll sell.

Research firms like comScore and NPD Group have also chimed in with their surveys of consumers outlining how many of them are likely to buy the device, and what they might do with it.

In a nutshell: 15-18% of consumers are considering buying an iPad, although the percentage who are very likely to buy one soon is more around the 9-10% mark.

Internet and email are clearly the two most popular uses for the iPad - at least those expressed by people before getting their hands on one - although e-books and music are also often cited.

And predictions? Stick a thumb in the air - guesses range from one to two million units in Apple's current fiscal year, to anywhere between 3.5 million and 6 million in fiscal 2011.
