iPad apps now 'flagship newspaper products' for News Corporation

But James Murdoch warns they can be 'cannibalistic'...

News Corporation's EMEA CEO James Murdoch has told an industry conference that iPad is now at the heart of its newspaper strategy.

"Our flagship newspaper products are now the iPad apps," Murdoch told the Monaco Media Forum on Friday.

"The problem with the apps is they’re much more directly cannibalistic of the core print product than the website."

Murdoch also told the assembled media dignitaries that iPad users "interact more - they don't dip in and out", but pointed to the fact that it is early days for advertising within these apps.

The iPad app for The Times newspaper in the UK was a key part of News Corp's strategy to put the paper's digital content behind a paywall.
