INQ: "It's much more about 'The Social Phone' this time round"

INQ:

INQ CEO Frank Meehan says the company's new INQ Chat 3G handset won't be marketed as 'The Twitter Phone'.

INQ's first handset, the INQ1, was promoted as a Facebook phone last year, but Meehan has told ME that the company's new handsets offer a broader mix of social features.

"It's much more about 'The Social Phone' this time, as we've gone harder after a broader range of things, with Facebook, Twitter and email as part of it," he says.

Meehan also says INQ isn't worried that Apple will get shirty about the iTunes-syncing capabilities of the new Chat 3G and Mini 3G handsets, as it did when Palm's Pre launched with a similar feature.

Whereas Palm engineered the Pre to effectively pretend to be an iPod when connecting to iTunes, INQ is using the third-party DoubleTwist software to sync with users' iTunes libraries.

"We're not trying to do what Palm did, which is try to break iTunes itself," says Meehan.

"That's just leading you up the path to Apple stopping you. But DoubleTwist has been out for a little while, and it's validated. I don't think Apple is going to get terribly bothered about it."
