Informa says 'don't panic'

The most reassuring words you'll hear all day if you work in mobile and worry about global recession.

Informa Telecoms & Media’s latest Global Mobile Market Outlook report has taken a leaf out of the Hitchhiker's Guide, assuring the industry that despite all the economic doom there really is no reason to panic.

In fact, the market tracker says that behind all the financial turmoil "there are opportunities available for investors, operators and vendors in the dynamic global mobile industry".

Specifically, Informa is looking to emerging markets. It says revenues from mobile data services in the Middle East during 3Q08 reached $1 billion, with the region's largest operators on the expansion trail.

The report concedes there is less room for optimism in Europe and North America, but asserts that there is still a "mood for service innovation" in places like Germany and the US.

Informa Principal Analyst Nicholas Jotischky said: "Like any sector, those companies that can most clearly and effectively differentiate their services from those of their competitors, and build their brand, will win out by retaining existing custom and by winning new business."
