That's 30 per cent of the country's total population.
According to a new Wireless Intelligence study, India's 3G connections are set to grow three-fold between 2011 and 2015.
The Indian operators will be hugely cheered if the projection is correct as they spent a combined US$15bn acquiring WCDMA 3G spectrum at auction last year.
Seven Indian operators plus the two state-owned operators (BSNL and MTNL) now operate 3G networks.
Wireless Intelligence forecasts that all new WCDMA-based operators will have launched services by June 2011.
It says that by 2015, Bharti – India's largest operator - will command the largest 3G share (18 per cent), followed by Reliance (15 per cent) and BSNL (13 per cent).

Initial 3G rollouts will be concentrated in the metro areas but more populous regions such as Punjab, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana will dominate ultimately.
Since no 3G operator can offer a nationwide service, this will require network sharing and roaming between operators.
