Huawei and ZTE to ship almost 100m smartphones in 2012

Chinese OEMs target a joint global market share of 15 per cent.

Last week, we reported that Huawei plans to ship 60 million smartphones this year, up from 20 million in 2011.

Now, Digitimes reports that Huawei is poised to reach its goal, while fellow Chinese manufacturer ZTE will ship around 40 million devices to collectively reach the 100 million mark.

The results will in turn translate into a combined 15 per cent smartphone market share, which will provide the two firms with running ground to roll out their respective high end device strategies.

To put this into context, Samsung led the market in 2011 with 97 million shipments, while Apple was second with 93 million and Nokia was third with 77 million.

Both firms plan to develop their market share with quad-core powered superphones, which were unveiled at MWC last month.

Additionally, Huawei plans to become a top three smartphone vendor in the next five years.
