HTC to make PlayStation devices?

Smartphones and tablets could have access to classic Sony games.

Sony's certification will provide HTC with permission to introduce the PlayStation back-catalogue of games to all of its device users, according to Pocket-lint.

It's a questionable move, considering that Sony split from Ericsson to spread its wings in the smartphone market by delivering a more integrated hardware and software experience.

Sharing its gaming platform with a rival will mean relinquishing a would-be USP for Sony.

The report cites sources that claim an official announcement will take place at MWC, however HTC said it would not "comment on rumours or speculation."

Sony (then Sony Ericsson) launched the The Xperia Play last spring as its first PlayStation phone. The device featured PlayStation-branded buttons, a flip-screen and links to the PlayStation Suite platform, which allows gamers to download PSone and Android software.

The news comes after our report that Sony may be developing a PlayStation Vita operating system for smartphones and tablets, despite the gaming device not receiving a worldwide release until next week.
