HTC targets emerging markets for 2012

Firm also plans to dive back into the tablet pool with new device.

HTC says its assault on the emerging markets will see equal investment weight that the likes of the US and Europe have seen.

The company also claims to be "open minded" about acquiring new patents to fight against Apple with the launch of a new tablet.

A lot of firms doing well in emerging markets such as Asia Pacific offer a cheap range of smartphones such as Huawei and ZTE but in a media briefing Peter Chou, HTC CEO said he refused to give up its "premium brand" face by expanding with cheap devices.

So far the firm has only created the HTC Flyer device, which was released in spring this year but Chou is clear that the company will enter the market.

Chou said: "Customers are willing to pay more, that's why we have grown nearly five times in China this year. It shows that customers support our philosophy.

"Tablet is a market we would like to try and test, to see whether we can make ourselves stand out and prevent a me-too product."

The manufacturer recently warned Q4 sales would fall from Q3 as hard up consumers spend less and competition grows.

Research firm IDC recently said HTC had surpassed RIM for Q3 shipments resulting in it becoming the fourth largest smartphone maker in the world.

Just last week we reported that HTC had also been crowned as the US smartphone leader.
