HTC and Motorola watch Samsung disappear into the distance

Disappointing financials from the two Android OEMs.

Last week, Samsung confirmed stellar results, with record smartphone sales of 35m driving Q4 operating profit to an all-time high of $4.5bn.

It appears to have enjoyed its success at the expense of HTC and Motorola.

HTC said on Friday that its unaudited fourth quarter net profit fell by 26 per cent year-on-year to NT$11.02bn ($365n) from NT$14.8bn a year earlier. Its fourth quarter revenue fell by 2.5 per cent to NT$101.42bn.

This represents the Taiwanese OEM's first quarterly decline in two years. Although its Desire HD and Sensation phones have been well-received, they have failed to match the appeal of Samsung Galaxy range.

Its tablets have been a wash-out too - but you could say that about any Android tablet to be fair.

Meanwhile Motorola Mobility reported preliminary fourth quarter sales figures show final year sales static at $3.4bn. Analysts were expecting $4bn.

Motorola attributed the stagnation to competition and IP legal battles. It shipped about 10.5m devices during the period, of which more than half were smartphones.

However, 2011 was the year Moto was sold to Google, so all eyes will be on how its new owner positions the company in 2012.
