HMV and Orange team up for mobile games store

And it's not just for Orange customers.

Orange and HMV have announced plans to launch a new Java mobile games store, called HMV Mobile Games.

It launches next Friday (26th March), and will let customers on any mobile network buy J2ME games, with more than 1,000 handsets supported.

The store, which will take the form of a mobile website, will offer reviews and previews, free demo downloads, as well as new releases and premium games for £3-£5, and older titles starting from £1.

Users will pay via their phone bills - directly for Orange customers, and via Pay For It billing for those on other networks.

"We’re delighted to be launching this new mobile offer to get them closer to games content in a way that’s relevant to them," says Tim Ellis, head of games at HMV.

ou might wonder why the store is J2ME-only though - why not also sell games for, say, Symbian and Android handsets? Perhaps the store will expand to smartphones in the future.

Still, Orange UK's business development director Stephen Harris is bullish about its prospects, saying HMV Mobile Games will "allow us to increase our reach in mobile gaming and build on our success as the number one mobile gaming operator in the UK".
