HIT Lab launches augmented reality iPhone games

Drift and Splatter Bugs offer camera-fuelled racing and cockroach-squashing.

New Zealand developer HIT Lab has launched its first two augmented reality games for iPhone under its new publishing brand of Slapdown Games.

The two games, Drift and Splatter Bugs, are both available on the App Store, and use the iPhone's camera to overlay the game elements onto the real world.

Gamers print out a physical 'game card', and then point their iPhone's camera at it when playing the games. Drift is a racing title, while Splatter Bugs involves squashing an army of cockroaches.

"While each of the Slapdown Games is a great deal of fun, there is significant science behind what we have produced," says CEO Andrew Plimmer.

"We have combined some of the most advanced computer vision techniques with artificial intelligence, game mechanics and interaction design, to create an incredibly compelling user experience."

What's more, HIT Lab hopes that its AR games will appeal to advertisers in the future, too.

"With our technology it is possible to launch experiences like shooting hoops in 3D against a billboard using a mobile phone," says Plimmer.

"It’s a fun way to spend the time waiting for a bus, and provides a good experience for both the user and advertiser."
