Hello Kitty Android smartphone makes a cute debut in Japan

Where else?

Cutesy Japanese cartoon cat Hello Kitty? There's an app for that. Several, in fact. But now there's also a dedicated Hello Kitty smartphone released by operator SoftBank.

The 007SH KT was unveiled late last week, and has a clamshell design. However, it's no feature phone: the device runs the Android 2.3 operating system, and is apparently the first clamshell handset to do so.

The device also has a 16-megapixel camera, a 3.4-inch touchscreen, a digital TV tuner - a standard handset feature in Japan nowadays - and an e-wallet.

On the content side, the phone's interface has been given a Hello Kitty makeover, and there are also themed apps preloaded on the device.

Will it come to the West? In a word: no. But it's interesting to see this kind of customised handset upgraded to a smartphone in Japan rather than the traditional feature phone.
