Handset shipments hit 346.2 million in Q3

Up 20 per cent year-on-year.

ABI Research says smartphone 'envy' is responsible for the growth in otherwise challenging economic conditions.

It found that smartphone specialists like RIM, Apple, HTC and Motorola outperformed the market in terms of market share.

Apple and RIM increased their market-shares to 4.1 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

Nokia is the market leader with 31.9 per cent, Samsung second with 20.6 per cent, while LG has 8.2 percent, Sony Ericsson at 3 per cent and Motorola at 2.6 per cent.

ABI believes a 'component crunch' could threaten some companies - especially those that outsource such resources. It namechecks Nokia as under threat, but says self-reliant Samsung and LG culd benefit.
