ABI Research says the result significantly exceeded the previous forecast of 253.5 million and declared “green shoots are sprouting”. As a result it revised its forecasts for 2009 from minus 8.4 per cent to minus 8 per cent.

SonyEricsson 5.6%
RIM 3.0%
Apple 1.5%
Sony Ericsson posted the biggest fall, thanks to its over-exposure to the stricken feature phone segment and lack of activity in smartphones. Nokia also suffered.
