Handset sales up 14 per cent in Q1

Global sales of mobile phones reached 257.4 million units in 1Q 2007, a 14 per cent increase from the same period last year, according to Gartner.

Nokia sold close to 92 million mobile phones in the quarter, which resulted in a 35.7 per cent market share, equal to a 1.8 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2006.

Gartner says Nokia’s sales were driven by its multimedia portfolio, which accounted for around 8 million units sold.

It expects Nokia to take advantage of second-ranked Motorola’s weakness in forthcoming quarters and maintain its solid performance. The US company took an 18.5 per cent share in Q1.

Samsung’s sales reached just over 32 million units in the quarter, equivalent to a market share of 12.5 percent, unchanged from the same period in 2006.

Sony Ericsson's sales reached 21.7 million units for an 8.4 per cent share, while LG took 6.2 per cent.

Gartner says the overall global growth in handset sales in Q1 was driven by strong demand in China and Japan. Western Europe and North America registered the expected slow down after strong Christmas sales and saw only moderate growth over the same period in 2006.
