Who's havin' MPP? Oh, you know, newspapers, magazines and publishers.

Handmark says it plans to make mobile apps for more than 500 newspapers, magazines and content publishers next year, using its Mobile Publishing Platform (MPP).

"The rapid proliferation of smartphones paired with the growing expectation consumers have for information at their fingertips underlines why it is absolutely essential publishers have a plan for mobile beyond basic web browsing," says CEO Paul Reddick.

"We are excited about the opportunities ahead this year and will continue to aggressively pursue partnerships with publishers to help open new doors for their business."

Handmark cites a survey from the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) claiming that more than half of its surveyed publications plan to launch a mobile news app in the next two years.

The space is certainly hotting up. This week saw the launch of The Guardian's iPhone app, with rival newspapers scrambling to follow suit (although some, like the Telegraph and FT, had already launched on the App Store).
