Half of tweets consumed come from 20,000 tweeters

Not as democratic as we're supposed to think, then.

A Yahoo Research report painted a picture of Twitter in which celebrity accounts rule and vast numbers of tweeters have no followers or just a handful.

And loads more are simply dormant.

Out of 175 million registered users:

90 million accounts have zero followers.
56 million accounts follow no other accounts.
85 million accounts have one or more followers.
119 million million follow one or more accounts.

Yahoo! looked at 260 million tweets and found that the service was overwhelmingly top heavy.

“Based on this classification, we find the media produces the most information, but celebrities are the most followed,” a Yahoo! spokesperson said.

"Information flows have not become egalitarian by any means."

Great potential in twitter. The question for most people and brands is how to engage the current users.
