Guardian to introduce new subscription-based iPhone app

£2.99 for six months or £3.99 for a year.

UK newspaper The Guardian is getting a new iPhone app this December, with a new subscription-based pricing model.

Rather than the one-off £2.39 fee charged for its existing app, the new version will cost £2.99 for six months' access, or £3.99 for a year.

The newspaper confirmed the plans on its website today, while explaining that the US version of the app will be free and ad-supported instead.

The current iPhone app has been downloaded more than 205,000 times, meaning revenues of just over £340,000 for the newspaper group after Apple's 30% cut.

That app will be removed from the App Store when the new version goes live, but will still work for people who have already bought it.

The Guardian's publisher GMG is promising "a number of new features" to persuade those users to switch to the new subscription version, but has not yet given details.

In the same article, GMG confirms that it "also has an iPad app in the early stages of development", and flags the relaunch of its mobile website, which will remain free to access.

The latter now has faster updates, redesigned article and gallery pages, and more content available to read. It is currently averaging 500,000 page impressions a day.

More than 5% of The Guardian's total digital impressions now come from mobile devices.
