Today’s entry focusses on how SMS messaging is used as a powerful tool in government.
Many see her as the most powerful woman on the planet. Angela Merkel, Germany’s chancellor, has been in charge of the country for seven years. One of her favorite tools of communication: SMS.
Mrs. Merkel is often seen texting from Parliamentary sessions as well as meetings of her cabinet. Long ago she admitted in a German TV show that SMS to her is the most efficient way of communicating – she said she didn’t have a voice box because listening to it took too long. When one of her ministers decided to resign last year, he knew the best way to get the message across to the boss herself: Texting. Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey met with Mrs. Merkel this year and later tweeted: “Loves SMS and has the mind of a scientist: forever curious.” Though Dorsey tried hard, the Chancellor denied she was ready to switch to 140 characters.
