Confirms new specs and launches RCS DevChallenge to encourage RCS-based service ideas.
The trade body's RCS Initiative provides operators with a set of shared specs around enhanced communications across mobile and online. Its aim is to standardise in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging, presence-enhanced contact management and more.
“Users want to be able to access and share rich content between their mobile phone and their PC and RCS Release 2 will enable operators to provide this through a variety of new applications and services,” said Alex Sinclair, CTO at the GSMA.
RCS is already in live deployment in South Korea and there are 81 operators and equipment manufacturers supporting RCS worldwide.
The RCS DevChallenge will encourage developers to deliver RCS clients in two categories: Best RCS Client (with separate mobile and PC sub-categories) and Best RCS Innovation. The winners will be highlighted in the RCS DevChallenge Showcase at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February 2010.
The contest is sponsored by Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Orange and Telefonica.
