GSM stalls as 3G surges across Europe

Q1 08 saw the lowest figure for GSM net additions in Europe in almost 15 years.

There were just 0.38m new connections in the quarter – a significant slowdown given that the previous grew by an average of 10m. Italy, Spain, the UK and France all lost around 1m GSM customers and several other smaller markets, including Poland, Czech Republic and Bulgaria, also saw losses.

Conversely, W-CDMA (3G) recorded its third highest ever net additions, with 9.10m signing up. W-CDMA’s annual net additions were 37.49m, compared to GSM’s 31.49m. This brings the market totals to 642.85m for GSM and 89.97m for W-CDMA.
