Merchants across the States now able to use dongle-based platform following trial run in San Francisco.
Daily deals specialist Groupon has added a significant update to the Groupon Merchants app for iPhone and iPod Touch, giving businesses the ability to process credit cards through their devices via a Square-like dongle.
GrouponPayments is open to any company running deals on its service, and claims to have the lowest rates in today’s marketplace.
MasterCard, Visa and Discover swipes will cost 1.8 per cent plus $0.15 per transaction, rising to three per cent for AmEx. Comparatively, Square charges a flat rate of 2.75 per cent per swipe or a monthly fee of $275.
Interestingly though, is the fact Groupon will open the doors to non-Groupon merchants for a trial run, with a slightly increased rate of 2.2 per cent – AmEx remains the same.
Mihir Shah, VP of mobile and merchant products at Groupon, said: "Our goal is to provide merchants with the most affordable and powerful tools to run and grow their businesses.
"With groundbreaking pricing and service, Groupon Payments does just that."
Customers can also expect support seven days a week, calculation and billing features, secure transactions and analytics to monitor revenues.
Square has been dominating the market and just closed a $200m funding round, but Groupon has been building its mobile arm with the acquisitions of Breadcrumb, Ditto, Hyperpublic and Kima Labs, while it recently partnered with Nokia for a Lumia integration.
