Gracenote notches up its 200 billionth query

Media database is fairly popular.

Metadata firm Gracenote says its Global Media Database has been queried more than 200 billion times, and is currently averaging 4.5 billion queries a month.

The database is used for CD and DVD recognition, music tagging, music and video search and music recommendations, accessed by mobile phones, cars, home entertainment systems, PC applications and websites.

It has more than 250 million users across over 2,000 applications in 200 countries, the company claims. More than one billion content items have been submitted to the database.

"There is no doubt that the demand for and consumption of digital entertainment is at an all-time high, with the globalisation of content and the increasing introduction of new devices," says president Craig Palmer.

"The sheer number of queries we are processing proves that our continuous innovation, technologies and strategic partnerships make us uniquely positioned in the marketplace."

Gracenote's database is behind the MusicID technology found in Sony Ericsson handsets, among other mobile services.
