GQ launches social location bar guide app for Sydney

Lets people check-in while boozing.

GQ Magazine has launched a social location bar guide app for iPhone, focusing on Sydney watering holes.

The app, called GQ BarSpy, costs $1.99 on the App Store, and provides information and reviews on bars and pubs around the Australian city.

However, it's also got Foursquare-style check-ins, so users can let their friends know where they're drinking. The check-ins can be pushed out to Facebook and Twitter.

In fact, it's copied more than that from Foursquare: users can win badges (or 'stickers') for their check-in exploits, competing with other users to win 'mogul' status.

"GQ BarSpy guides you, the man about town, as you uncover all the hippest places in the Harbour City," promises the App Store blurb.

Whether people will pay for an app that's geographically restricted compared to the still-free Foursquare remains to be seen.
