Google has announced that it will close its Google Wave service by the end of this year.
The online collaboration service - which had a mobile web element - was hailed as the next big thing when it launched last year.
However, criticism of its usability, as well as confusion over what it was actually for, have led to its demise as a standalone service.
Google's blog post announcing the news hails Wave's innovations, including sharing images and other media in real-time, improved spell-checking, character-by-character live typing, and allowing developers to build widgets to add new features.
