Google to unveil NFC service tomorrow?

Mobile payment service project will be a joint venture with Sprint Nextel, say sources.

Stories are circulating that Google is preparing to go ahead with its much-rumoured service, and thus beat the cross-operator service Isis and any proposed initiative by Apple to market.

The story first appeared in March, suggesting that Google was working with reader and software specialist Verifone to deliver the service.

Google has sent out invitations for a press event in New York tomorrow, implying that the scheme is now ready to go live.

The Nexus S phone, which Google developed with Samsung last year, is the only Android device to support contactless NFC tech.

It's believed this device will be central to the scheme, which will let consumers pay for goods and redeem coupons by touching their phone on a reader.

Earlier reports said Google plans to introduce the service in five cities: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington DC.

Apple has been hiring NFC teams and filing patents, but is not thought to be readying an NFC service in time for the launch of its next iPhone.

Meanwhile ISIS, a joint service by AT&T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile USA is due for a trial with Salt Lake City's transport department in early 2012.
