Google to launch web-based Android music store

And it's bought cloud-streaming service Simplify Media too.

Besides dishing out some Android data at its Google I/O conference yesterday, Google also showed off a new music store for Android smartphones.

The store will be web-based, rather than a downloadable app for Android handsets. Users will browse songs on their desktop, but when bought they will be automatically downloaded to their smartphone.

According to TechCrunch, no details were given on a likely launch date, deals with music labels, or pricing of tracks.

The timing may be no co-incidence. Apple is holding its WWDC conference early next month, and has been tipped to unveil a cloud-streaming version of its iTunes Store at the event.

Talking of cloud-streaming... Google also announced yesterday that it has acquired Simplify Media, a company whose service lets people stream their music collections to any device.
