Google the UK operator?

Google is rumoured to planning a bid for UK mobile spectrum.

The Guardian newspaper has reported that the search giant is considering the move after Ofcom's announced its intention to take back and auction part of the 2G spectrum handed over in 1985. The spectrum could be used for wireless broadband services. Vodafone and O2 (then Cellnet), were given the spectrum when the UK mobile industry began 22 years ago.

Google is already planning to bid for spectrum in the US when it comes up for sale early next year. It’s also supposed to be making its own phone, mobile payments service and content-specific search service. It’s all over mobile, in other words.
