Google targets mobile social networking

Google’s at it again, acquiring mobile social networking start-up Zingku.

Zingku is one of the many pureplays aiming to encourage people to share content and build communities via the mobile phone. It also offers businesses a means to send ‘mobile flyers’ to customers advertising products and services.

Zingku was started in 2005 and has been in testing with users in the US. It is free to use and employs standard browser, text and picture messaging, so no special software has to be installed.

The acquisition adds another element to a frantic period of mobile-related activity for Google. In addition to rolling out mobile versions of its core products such as Google Maps and Adsense, the company has also signed deals with operators like Vodafone and T-Mobile to host its search service. Recent speculation suggests that Google is now planning a phone or an MVNO. Or both. Or neither.
