Google stands behind HTC in looming Apple patent battle

Not named in the lawsuit... yet.

Google has issued a statement making clear its support for HTC, as the latter faces up to a patent lawsuit from Apple.

"We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it," says a spokesperson, in a statement emailed to TechCrunch.

The tech blog points out that the statement was "proactively" sent to it by Google, rather than a response to a question.

As we pointed out last night, Apple's lawsuit looks to be as much about Android as about HTC, with several of the patents relating to features of the Android OS itself, rather than merely HTC's phones.

Google isn't named in the lawsuit, but it will be fascinating to see what standing behind HTC will mean as the situation evolves.
