Google's Nexus One not such a big leap after all?

Google's Nexus One not such a big leap after all?

So says tech blog Engadget, anyway.

Google isn't due to formally announce its Nexus One handset until tomorrow, but tech blog Engadget has already bagged one of the devices for a detailed preview.

Its most controversial conclusion? The handset isn't the huge leap forward it's been trailed as in recent weeks.

"The thing that's struck us most (so far) about the Nexus One is the fact that it's really not very different from the Droid in any substantial way," writes Engadget's Joshua Topolsky.

He goes on to say that although it's fast, it's "not some paradigmatic shift for Android" - nor does it support multi-touch.

The article provides a more detailed specs list too:

- Android 2.1 OS
- 1GHZ Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU
- 3.7-inch 480x800 touchscreen
- 512MB of ROM and 512MB of RAM
- 4GB microSD card
- Five-megapixel camera

The Nexus One is clearly going to be the first hot Android handset of 2010, but just not possibly the game-changer that it was initially hailed as.

That said, the story of 2010 for Android will be about the alternative it provides to iPhone with a range of quality handsets, not one single iPhone-killer. In that sense, Nexus One will clearly be an important ingredient in the platform's growth.
