Google responds to Apple subs with Google One Pass
Publishers can try various models to see what sticks: subscriptions, metered access, freemium and single articles sales from their websites or apps.
Google CEO Eric Schmidt unveiled One Pass at Humboldt University to give publishers the ability to set their own prices and terms for their digital content.
It represents yet another attempt to create a viable online publishing model for newspapers, magazines, ebook publishers and so on.
Consumers can buy from a One Pass publisher using a single sign-on.
Google's system gives publishers the tools to make decisions about billing models then takes care of the rest, via Google Checkout.

German publishers Axel Springer AG, Focus Online and Stern.de were revealed as the first Google One Pass partners at the event.
Google One Pass is currently available for publishers in Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the UK and the US.
The announcement comes in the same week that Apple revealed plans to support subs but charge an ongoing 30 per cent rev share for the lifetime of the sub if initiated from iTunes.
