Google offers more than one million free EPUB ebook downloads

Just in time for Sony's new EPUB-friendly ebook devices to go on sale.

Google has announced that it's making more than a million out-of-copyright books available as free ebook downloads, using the open EPUB format.

They include Treasure Island and other books that are in the public domain.

"By adding support for EPUB downloads, we're hoping to make these books more accessible by helping people around the world to find and read them in more places," writes Google Books product manager Brandon Badger in a blog post.

The announcement - presumably not co-incidently - comes days after Sony launched three new ebook readers, which all use the EPUB format.

Owners of those devices will now be able to grab all manner of out-of-copyright literature from Google, while using Sony's own ebook store for more recent titles.

The EPUB format is also used for some mobile ebook apps, including Stanza on the iPhone.
