No 'navigate to' voice commands, but other features remain intact.
Google has released a new version of its Google Maps Navigation app that works on handsets running the Android 1.6 software.
Until now, the app required Android 2.0 to work, meaning it only ran on one handset: Motorola's Droid.
The app, which blends Google Maps with turn-by-turn navigation for driving, caused a huge stir when announced - not to mention a sharp drop in share prices for the GPS satnav firms whose services it competes with.
Users with handsets running Android 1.6 can now download the app for free from the Android Market store.
In the blog post announcing the update, product manager Michael Siliski says that some features are missing from the 1.6 version of the app, including the ability to use the 'navigate to' voice command.

However, given the millions of Android handsets out there that haven't been able to use the app until now, we sense this missing feature won't stop Google Maps Navigation becoming a hugely popular download.
