Google has updated its Google Maps mobile application with a new 'layers' feature overlaying content over its maps.
Initially available on the Symbian and Windows Mobile versions of the app, it lets people see extra information, including public transport, traffic info, local search results and Wikipedia links while viewing a map.
It also ties in with Google's Latitude location-based service, which lets people track and be tracked by their friends. It also supports the My Maps feature from Google's desktop maps service, for example letting people trace their own bike routes.
These layers can be viewed individually, or combined together, and the new feature is available in every country where Google offers the application (which you can get from m.google.com/maps in your mobile browser).
It's the latest example of Google beefing up its mobile Google Maps app. There's no news on when this functionality will appear in Google Maps for iPhone, which is embedded with the core iPhone software.
