It's only for employees – for now.
Everyone's going a bit crazy for this story, broken by the AndoidOS blog. It's revealed that Google employees in Spain are getting a Google SIM card with their Nexus S phones.
The move seems designed to make it cheaper and easier for the staff to use data-centric Android services.
Rumours that Google would launch itself as a mobile network have been around for years, no doubt spooking even the most cool-headed operator exec.
Clearly, this isn't a fully fledged MVNO. But already there's speculation that Google will roll its SIMs out to staff in other countries and could go further at some point.
Google will be treading carefully. Don't forget, the search giant tried to take on the traditional industry when it sold its first Nexus phone direct from the web. That was a disasterous experiment that was swiftly abandoned.
