Group video chat added to Google+ app, but only on Android for now.
Google is opening its Google+ social network up to everyone today, following its initial three months when it was an invite-only 'field trial'. From today, anyone can sign up from the Google+ website.
"We’re nowhere near done, but with the improvements we’ve made so far we’re ready to move from field trial to beta," blogs Google's SVP of engineering Vic Gundotra. "This way anyone can visit google.com/+, join the project and connect with the people they care about."
People using the Google+ app on Android smartphones have even more reason to be cheerful today: it now supports the Hangout+ group video chat feature which has previously only been available on computers.
"We think Hangouts should keep pace with how you socialize in the real-world, so today we’re launching it on the one device that's always by your side: your mobile phone. To get started, simply find an active hangout in the Stream, and tap 'Join'," explains Gundotra.
For now, the feature is only available in the Android Google+ app on handsets with front-facing cameras, but he promises that an update to the iOS app will add it too.
