Google hails 65k daily Android handset sales

CEO Schmidt plugs 'ecosystem of openness'.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt has hailed the growing momentum behind its Android platform at the company's annual shareholder meeting.

"It looks like Android is going to be either the number one or number two player," said Schmidt.

"Our partners are shipping about 65,000 Android handsets per day but if you check the blogosphere you'll discover there are some reports that that number might be quite low."

Those blogosphere reports would be the ones focusing on low sales of the Nexus One handset, although recently more headlines have been taken by NPD Group's claim that Android outsold iPhone in the US in Q1 this year.

Schmidt also talked up Android's open nature, the same day as Adobe and Apple continued to slug it out over whether Flash was more closed than iPhone or vice versa.

"Our strategy is very different from everybody else's: We license our code for free, so that's really pretty revolutionary," said Schmidt.

(Symbian may have something to say about that).

"We're trying to build an entire ecosystem of openness, the inverse of the other guys."
