Google Gears goes wireless

Google has made its Google Gears app available for mobile developers.

Gears allows users to run online applications without an Internet connection. It saves data and documents are on the device so users can see and work on them any time.

It is already available for desktops and notebooks, and now the browser extension software has been made available to developers, according to a blog posting by Google mobile product manager Charles Wiles.

So far it's available only for Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices, but there will be versions for other platforms, including Google's own Android system.

Observers say mobile has been crying out for the app because it is far more vulnerable to lost connections than the fixed internet.
