Google debuts location-based search for iPhone 3.0

iPhone owners can now search on Google using their current location, the company has announced.

The feature is called Search with My Location for iPhone 3.0, and is available for anyone visiting the main Google website using their iPhone's Safari browser.

They can set their location by tapping a link on the homepage, and search results will then be tailored for that location.

"Testing this in New York, my search for 'jazz clubs' returned a handful of places within walking distance," writes mobile product manager Joshua Siegel on Google's official blog. "I picked one, tapped the phone number, made a reservation, and we were set for the night."

Niiiice.

Google says the location-based feature won't kick in unless users explicitly opt in, and it can be turned off using the Preferences section of Google's site.

For now, the new feature is available for US and UK users. Besides the iPhone-friendly website, it also works in Google's iPhone application.
